British East India Company had a sizable Army in India. By 1806, they had about 154,000 armed force and far more than most armies of other foreign invaders at that time in India.

Even after the rebellions of 1806 and 1857 , the britishers increased the armed forced to 550,000.Besides their army in India, Company & later Britain had Navies in the Indian ocean from Malaysia, Australia to South Africa. The creation of railway system further strengthened the administration by easing troop movement within India.
